The entire edition was never fully realized and this artwork is considered by experts to be extremely rare. It is my opinion that at most a few hundred sets were created due to frequency in the marketplace and low numbers seen in the US and European editions. I also have one other example of "The Dentist" from the European edition numbered 60 of 1500. One may find similar listings on the Internet which appear to be silver editions, however, they are not authentic. The vast majority of all silver editions on the Internet are merely silver colored paper advertising flyers that were printed to advertise this authentic edition and bolster sales. An edition was also authorized in gold, however, it was never created. This artwork is referenced in the catalog raisonne by Albert Field plate code 80-4 and appendix M pages 186, 217. Regarding the composition of the metal plaque: I have not determined if the plaque is solid silver or silver plated over another metal. The COA states the artwork is on a reinforced plate of 925/1000 silver and there are hallmarks impressed in the plaque. However, a pawn shop owner recently contacted me and tested his exemplar which he stated came up as silver plated. Therefore, I cannot be certain if the plaque is solid silver or silver plated.
I do not want to perform an acid test on the plaque because the value is in the artwork not in the silver. Nevertheless, the artwork is authentic as issued and quite rare. DIMENSIONS : 20 x 30 centimeters. The weight of the artwork is approximately 220 grams. The Silver plaque is a reinforced plate of 925/1000 silver.SIGNATURE : This artwork is signed "Dali" through a special engraving process carved into the silver plate. Salvador Dali authorized this signature to be carved into the silver plate. There are also hallmarks and the number of the edition 17/99NY are stamped into the silver in the lower margin of the artwork. Artwork is in very good condition. The colors are still very bright with good contrasts.
This artwork has never been framed. It has always been in its original soft protective pouch. PROVENANCE : This artwork came from a prominent estate in Connecticut, USA.GUARANTEE: A Certificate of Authenticity hand signed by Laurent Ashton will accompany this artwork. This artwork is also accompanied by its original COA which is printed on lambskin parchment and signed by a representative of Tobo Arte, Milan, Italy.
